City of Windsor Offering Community Garden Funding!

On January 23, 2012, Windsor City Council approved up to $100,000 in one-time funding to support community garden expansion projects in Windsor-Essex County.

This initiative has been branded Seed & Feed, and will provide one-time grant funding to eligible applicants who can demonstrate that their community garden project will provide fresh produce to people who may otherwise go without. This will ultimately benefit the health and well-being of children, youths, adults and seniors in Windsor-Essex County.

Applications for Seed & Feed grant funding may be submitted from March 5, 2012 to 12:00 noon on March 19, 2012. Successful applicants will be notified by telephone by April 2, 2012.

Successful applicants are expected to abide by certain terms and conditions as outlined in the application package.

Project Pawpaw - Grower Training Seminars Offered

As part of this special initiative, a series of grower training seminars on Pawpaw cultivation have been scheduled throughout Windsor and Essex County during March.

This series has been developed by the Naturalized Habitat Network with assistance from the Pawpaw Research Program at Kentucky State University and provides a comprehensive overview of this species, along with its unique requirements and cultivation techniques.

These seminars are open to both home gardeners and professional growers and cover everything from planting recommendations to harvesting techniques and kitchen preparation.

Pawpaw seedlings will also be available for qualifying participants. In addition, participants will be able to participate in a variety of follow-up tours scheduled throughout the coming year. Over a dozen training sessions have been scheduled to take place across Windsor and Essex County.

Elizabeth May to Speak in Windsor!

WECEC's "Green Speaker Series" will kick-off with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May speaking to Windsor-Essex residents free of charge on Saturday, January 28th at Dr. David Suzuki Public School (6320 Raymond Ave, Windsor).

Join us for light refreshments at 10am. Elizabeth will begin speaking at 10:30am about "Canada's role in addressing the climate crisis and why Kyoto matters".
